Generally, both laminate and LVP flooring consist of 4 layers which are the backing layer, core, printed design layer and top with wear layer. The differences are the material used for each layers, especially the core material. Laminate uses a fiberboard in either a Medium Density (MDF) or High Density (HDF) depending on the quality of the flooring. Higher-quality laminate uses a water-resistant HDF. LVP is named after the core material, Stone Plastic Composite. It is a very rigid and durable material and is 100% waterproof.
Most waterproof vinyl floors have a backing already attached, so you don’t need to buy underlay. However, if your flooring doesn’t come with pre-attached underlayment, you should purchase it. Underlayment provides thermal insulation, covers minor subfloor imperfections, and increases the lifetime of your floor.
If you have a pet, the thicker the wear layer the better. Over time, scratches may occur. We recommend keeping nails trimmed as needed.

When you look at vinyl flooring, it’s more important to look at wear layer thickness rather than plank thickness. The thicker the wear layer (or, the higher the mil number), the more resistance to wear and tear.Typical wear layer thickness ranges from 8mil to 20 mil, and even higher for heavy commercial use. The most common residential thickness is 12mil, but some customers prefer to use 20mil in their homes for high traffic areas or if they have pets.
